Was a paperboy in 1970. Small bicycle route. One customer, an old widow, paid me with silver certificate dollars a few times. The certificates were mostly out of circulation in 1970. They seemed pretty cool to a 9-year-old paperboy. When I told her how I had showed the certificates to friends, her face went blank, and I never got another. It wasn't until many years later that I realized she had a stash of silver certificates in her house. She had lived through the Depression and still didn't trust banks.
