I think the need that people have for constant external stimulation is ripe for further analysis. People don’t even seem to care what the external stimulation is, as long as there’s a hope that in consuming it it will offer purpose or deeper meaning (or even wasted time). And as you’ve mentioned here (and elsewhere) in your own words, the dominant collective cultural objective in our society is the acquisition of wealth, which for a growing number is the only meaning to be had. So it makes a certain amount of sense (as much as anything does in a world that doesn’t make sense) that betting could possibly expand into areas of life where it had previously not appeared. I’m here for it. This stuff is interesting. I was going to share a story about a relative who gambles on FanDuel, but after listening to this I’m starting to wonder if these stories are basically ubiquitous.
I guess another possibility to treat the malaise would be mass social unrest compelling legislatures to pass policy which would address the structural and material issues that plague us, but I'm not gonna hold my breath for that shit because I think that possibility died with PATCO.
Yeah, it’s startling how ubiquitous it is. I’d certainly like to see that legislation passed as well, but forced gambling as a kind of behavior modification, dumb as it seems, is a much cheaper and more profitable fix. What times we live in
